  • Senior Speech Pathologist Peta Graciet with patient Karl Gobba
Dysphagia. A difficult diagnosis to swallow! 16 March 2021 Do you know the average Australian swallows 500-700 times a day. That’s around three times an hour during sleep, once per minute while awake and even more during meals. Most Australians are unaware how difficulty with swallowing can be frightening and life threatening. It’s why on Wednesday 17 March 2021, Peta Graciet, Senior Speech Pathologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, SCGH, is promoting Swallowing Awareness Day. Swallowing Awareness Day 2021 is an opportunity to bring attention to swallowing disorders and to connect people with speech pathologists, the professionals who can help. Speech Pathologists assess and treat people with Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) – pronounced ‘dis-fay-juh’. The theme for Swallowing Awareness Day in 2021 is: ‘Dysphagia. A difficult diagnosis to swallow!’ Around 15‐30 per cent of people aged 65+ living in the community have a swallowing difficulty, with that figure rising to over 50 per cent for older Aus...

Stroke treatment pioneer awarded for Excellence in Stroke Care Delivery 06 December 2019Clinical Associate Professor William McAuliffe, Interventional Neuroradiologist and Deputy Head of Department of the Neurological Intervention and Imaging Service of WA (NIISwa), has been instrumental in developing the state-wide stroke mechanical thrombectomy service in Western Australia and was awarded for his pioneering work at the Stroke Symposium in October this year. Mechanical thrombectomy is the endovascular removal of a clot that is blocking an artery in the brain causing a stroke. NIISwa provides a 24/7 state-wide mechanical thrombectomy service for Western Australia and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) is the 24/7 hub for this procedure. The procedure is time-critical and relies on all teams working together to expedite the patient journey in order to get the best outcome. It requires a highly co-ordinated work-flow that begins with St John Ambulance and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and in addition to NIISwa, involves the Emergency Department, Medical Imaging, Neurol...

  • Shirley receiving treatment via telehealth from Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital
Telehealth putting patient convenience front and centre 25 October 2019The North Metropolitan Health Service (NMHS) is expanding the use of ‘virtual’ consultations making it easier for Western Australians to meet with health care professionals at a time and a place convenient for them. Whether that’s from home, or even from a quiet room at work, NMHS is promoting the use of telehealth not just for regional patients, but for those in metropolitan areas too. Patients simply download a free app, connect to the internet from any suitable device, and login with the details provided to undertake their video consultation, meaning there’s no need for physical attendance at hospital. NMHS Telehealth Manager Tania Orr said that for many patients, the travel time and inconvenience of attending outpatient appointments at a hospital is often a barrier. “The reality is most of our patients have access to a video enabled device and the internet. Whether that’s a mobile phone, tablet, p.c. or laptop – that’s all that is r...
