Med Tech Services

Bioelectronics Engineering and Biomechanical Engineering

Med Tech Services is one of the core areas within the Medical Technology and Physics Department. Med Tech Services incorporates two subdivisions specialising in Bioelectronic and Biomedical Engineering.

Our aim is to provide a specialist biomedical technical and engineering service.

In all facets of SCGH and in fact any modern hospital, biomedical engineering plays a vital role in positive patient outcomes. Medical devices are also able to do physical harm to patients and users in the event of electrical or mechanical malfunction which could be caused by lack of maintenance or qualified support services.

In the Med Tech Services division we provide support to biomedical equipment used in SCGH and other hospitals within NMHS. Effective and efficient support is provided by Biomedical Engineers, Technical Officers and Technologists that have undertaken both manufacturer endorsed and in-house training.

All of our staff hold formal university or TAFE qualifications in Electronics or Mechanical Engineering, Science, Computing, or Anatomy and Physiology, as well as belonging to professional associations within the Biomedical Engineering community.

We are responsible for ensuring that supported medical devices are maintained to manufacturers’ specifications through:

  • Routine quality assurance testing
  • Electrical safety testing
  • Repairs by qualified staff

Med Tech Services division is also responsible for but not limited to:

  • New equipment acceptance testing
  • Patient treatment area testing and commissioning
  • Equipment hazard recalls and alerts
  • Providing on call service
  • Advice for equipment replacement
  • Advice on equipment purchases and options
  • Advice on site design planning for medical device placement and installation
  • Education and training
  • Research and development
  • Manufacturers’ documentation
    • User manuals
    • Service manuals

All activities undertaken in the Med Tech Services division are documented and controlled under an ISO9000 standard using eMed, our custom Business Management System.
