Acute Medical Wards
C14 – Acute Medical
Accepts Intensive Care Unit step down, acute medical, dermatology, rheumatology, endocrinology and immunology patients. C14 was refurbished in June 2023 and consists of 25 single rooms with ensuites.
G41 – Cardiology
Fourteen-bed cardiology ward with 10 beds for emergency patients and four beds for patients requiring overnight stay post cardiac procedure. Provides specialised care to patients with:
- Rehabilitation post ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI)
- Non-ST elevation myocardiacial infarction
- Stable and unstable angina
- Heart failure
- Tachy and Brady Arrhythmias.
Procedures include:
- cardiac catheterisation
- percutaneous coronary intervention
- cardiovascular implantable devices (permanent pacemakers, cardiac resynchronisation therapy, implantable defibrillator and subcutaneous defibrillator)
- electrophysiology studies and ablation
G51 – Neurology, State Epilepsy Management, Stroke Management
Neurology inpatient services incorporates two Western Australian state services; the 24/7 Acute Stroke Service and the Western Australian Adult Epilepsy Service.
Provides specialty service for acute care of all complex neurological presentations including:
- Stroke
- Epilepsy
- Encephalitis
- Meningitis
- Multiple Sclerosis and Motor Neurone Disease
- Myasthenia Gravis
- Guillain Barre Syndrome
- Movement disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease
Acute care nursing includes acute stroke management, seizure management, long-term video-EEG monitoring and invasive intracranial VEEG monitoring. Nursing treatments include:
- Tracheostomy
- Nasogastric
- PEG/PEGJ care
- Spirometry
- Pre/post care of interventions such as mechanical SPECT and Radioisotopes
- Care for a range of infusions such as thrombolysis
- IVIG and IV monoclonal antibodies
- Initiation, titration and assessment of Duodopa for Parkinson’s Disease.
G54 – Respiratory, Pulmonary Physiology, Respiratory Failure Unit
Twenty-eight-bed respiratory ward, which includes a six-bed Respiratory Special Care Unit (RSCU). Facilitates the management of patients with respiratory failure requiring non-invasive ventilation and high flow oxygen.
Staff develop the skills to competently manage patients in respiratory failure, pleural diseases, chronic asthma and, as the State Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre, work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide holistic care for patients.
G63
Thirty-bed ward caring for patients with a variety of acute and chronic conditions within the specialties of renal medicine, hepatology, gastroenterology, general surgery. Provides the state-wide service for liver transplant and complete most kidney transplants within the state.
Nurses will care for patients with:
- Peritoneal and haemodialysis
- Abdominal paracentesis
- Enteral and parenteral nutrition
- Pre and post operative care
- Wound care
- Radiological and endoscopic investigations and procedures
- Intravenous device management
- Blood and blood product transfusions
- Palliative and end of life care.
The ward also offers a structured learning pathway and contains a large multidisciplinary team consisting of nursing medical, allied health, Aboriginal liaison, and clinical nurse specialists working collaboratively to provide high quality patient centred care.
G64 – Plastics, ENT, Ophthalmology
Eighteen-bed surgical ward catering to plastics, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) and Ophthalmology patients. Staff can develop acute surgical and wound therapy skills.
G71 – Surgical Assessment Unit, General Surgery, Endocrine Surgery and Haematology/Medical Oncology
Thirty-bed hybrid acute medical/surgical ward that oversees the emergency admission of general surgery patients using its 14 bed Surgical Assessment Unit, as well as providing care for elective general surgery and breast surgery patients (nine beds), endocrine surgery patients (one bed) and haematology/medical oncology patients (six beds).
Enables nurses to consolidate their general medical/surgical skill set.
G72 – Acute Medical Assessment Unit
Thirty-six bed, unit that treats patients with acute, complex medical conditions including GI bleeds.
The unit has increased SDN cover and a transition to practice program is available. It also has its own AINs, some of which are nursing students, and is a good area to consolidate learning.
G73 – Haematology, Oncology
Thirty-bed ward dedicated to acute medical oncology, radiation oncology and haematology patients.
Nurses deliver complex and high-risk cancer treatments, while also providing individualised care to patients at various stages of their cancer journey from newly diagnosed to end of life care.
Care is delivered across 12 tumour streams, breast, upper and lower gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynaecological, clinical haematology, head and neck, lung, melanoma and skin, neurological, sarcoma and cancer of unknown primary. In addition, SCGH provides the state-wide service for both sarcoma and primary brain tumours.
Nurses gain specialty specific competencies including:
- New trial medications
- Antineoplastic administration
- Autologous peripheral blood stem cell reinfusions
- Tracheostomy care and management
- Malignant abdominal and pleural drains
- Intercostal catheters
- Nephrostomy tubes
- Radiologically inserted gastrostomies/percutaneous gastrostomies
- Nasogastric tubes
- Central venous access device care and management
- Intravenous canulation
- Blood and blood product transfusions
- Infusaport needling
G74 – Acute medical
Thirty-four-bed ward dedicated to acute, complex medical patients and is step down from the Intensive Care Unit.
There is a transition to practice program available and the ward offers a supportive environment with increased SDN cover. The ward also has its own AINs, some of which are nursing students, and is a good area to consolidate knowledge and acute skills.
Woods Ward - Hollywood Private Hospital – Acute medical
Woods Ward is a SCGH satellite acute medical ward located at Hollywood Private Hospital consisting of 26 beds.
It has its own SDNs and CNSs to support and develop staff and a registered medical officer onsite 24/7.
A transition to practice 26-week online program has been developed to create further learning opportunities for staff coming into medical and tertiary environments. Supported progression opportunities are also available.
