Research
Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital has a national and international reputation for ground-breaking research.
The hospital is home to highly acclaimed researchers such as Professor Peter Eastwood, whose sleep apnoea research in 2009 was named one in 10 of the Best Research Projects by the National Health and Medical Research Council.
We were also home to Nobel Laureate, Professor Barry Marshall (retired) whose revolutionary work, demonstrating that stomach ulcers are caused by bacteria and not stress, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2005.
SCGH is located at the QEII Medical Centre, which is set to become a fully integrated centre of excellence in clinical research as a result of major donations of infrastructure funds from the State and Federal Government and the University of Western Australia.
The Harry Perkins building on the QEII site is home to hundreds of researchers. The centre comprises laboratories for PathWest, a centre for the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research, facilities for the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research, and a centre dedicated to neuroscience research.
Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital has strong links to all major WA universities including the University of Western Australia, Edith Cowan University and Curtin University.
The Charlies Research Foundation provides essential funds and support for research at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Visit the Foundation’s website (external site) to learn more, and for information about getting involved and making donations.
