Anaesthesia Department

Anaesthesia provides a tertiary service to the surgical, medical and medical specialty divisions of the hospital. Approximately 2,000,000 minutes of anaesthesia and 1,350,000 minutes of Post Anaesthesia Recovery Unit time are provided per annum around the clock. 

In addition to anaesthesia, the department provides 495 pre-admission peri-operative assessment and management clinics per annum, an acute pain service providing 6800 consultant consultations per annum on 2500 complex patients, and the State peri-operative allergy consultation and testing clinic that manages 180 referrals per annum. 

ANZCA has accredited the department for training in anaesthesia. Sixteen ANZCA trainees, 14 provisional fellows, two CICM trainees and two ACEM trainees comprise the trainee cohort.
