Vascular and Endovascular Surgery

The Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Department at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital is a major tertiary provider for vascular and endovascular surgery.  Diseases treated include:

  • Peripheral arterial disease
  • Aneurysmal disease
  • Aortic dissection
  • Carotid artery disease
  • Renovascular disease
  • Visceral vessel disease
  • Acute vascular emergencies
  • Thoracic outlet syndrome
  • Multidisciplinary high risk foot and ulcer management
  • Renal access surgery
  • Acute and chronic complicated venous disease.
  • Rare vasculopathies

Specialists can treat vascular problems using open surgery or minimally invasive endovascular (keyhole) surgery depending on the patient, their anatomy, disease and the optimal outcomes for patient circumstances.

Endovascular surgery includes:

  • Balloon angioplasty (stretch of a narrowing in an artery)
  • Stenting (a metal spring left in the narrowing to hold it open)
  • Stent grafting (for example: use of a covered metal spring to exclude an aneurysm)

Vascular Surgery Clinics

Vascular Clinics run three times a week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Patients can be referred to this clinic via GP referral faxed to the Central Referral Service (CRS) (external site) on 1300 365 056.

Multidisciplinary foot ulcer clinic (MDFUC)

The Podiatry department coordinates a weekly outpatient multidisciplinary foot ulcer clinic (MDFUC) that meets the needs of patients with complex diabetes related foot disorders. This multidisciplinary service brings together the specialties of Vascular Surgery, Infectious Diseases, Endocrinology, Podiatry and Nursing to manage complex and limb threatening foot complications.

Patients can be referred to this clinic via GP referral faxed to the Central Referral Service (CRS) (external site) on 1300 365 056. A downloadable referral form (PDF) is available. Referrals must be clearly addressed to the Multidisciplinary Foot Ulcer Clinic.

Foot and Leg Ulcer Clinic (FLUC)

This weekly multidisciplinary vascular clinic focuses on acute and chronic foot and leg ulcers through aggressive wound management, podiatric and vascular input. Treating all venous, arterial, neuropathic, autoimmune and non-specific ulcers with both inpatient and community based care.

Patients can be referred to this clinic via GP referral faxed to the Central Referral Service (CRS) (external site) on 1300 365 056. A downloadable referral form (PDF) is available. Referrals must be clearly addressed to the Vascular Foot and Leg Ulcer Clinic.

Venous service at Osborne Park Hospital

The Vascular Surgery Department offer both open and endovascular treatment of varicose veins at Osborne Park Hospital. Patients must be symptomatic to be deemed suitable for treatment in the public sector. Symptoms that meet criteria include: oedema, skin changes, superficial thrombophlebitis with recurrent bleeding and/or ulceration. Patients can be referred to this clinic via GP referral faxed to the Central Referral Service (CRS) (external site) on 1300 365 056.

Supervised Exercise Program

The physiotherapy department run a supervised exercise program for patients with short to medium distance intermittent claudication. Referrals should be directed to the Vascular Surgery Department via the Central Referral Service (CRS) (external site) on fax: 1300 365 056.

Research

The vascular surgery department at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital has a strong research emphasis through the Heart and Vascular Research Institute. Headed by Professor Shirley Jansen, the department has collaborated on landmark trials including the COMPASS and ILLUMENATE trials. The department regularly has a high number of active research projects, and as a patient you may be asked whether you would like to participate.
