Hepatology Department and Liver Transplant Service

The Hepatology Department at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital provides comprehensive care for patients with acute and chronic liver disease across Western Australia. It delivers specialist inpatient and outpatient services, as well as statewide tertiary referrals for complex hepatology cases requiring advanced diagnostics, interventional management, or liver transplantation.

The service manages a high-volume outpatient clinic encompassing the full spectrum of hepatology, including assessment, diagnosis, and longitudinal management of chronic liver disease.

Core services include non-invasive liver assessment (FibroScan), telehealth for remote consultation services, and advanced endoscopic procedures, including management of complications of portal hypertension. The department also delivers multidisciplinary hepatology oncology care for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma.

The Liver Transplant Unit at SCGH forms part of the Western Australian Liver Transplant Service (WALTS) and is the state’s dedicated referral and treatment centre for liver transplantation. The service provides comprehensive pre-transplant assessment, peri-operative management, and long-term post-transplant follow-up for patients across Western Australia, and participates in a range of clinical trials and translational research activities that inform our practice.

Our referral base draws from within SCGH, referring tertiary hospitals, and private physicians and GP’s.
