Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Oral and Cranio-Maxillofacial

The Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery department provides a full range of reconstruction for emergency and elective cases, and works very closely with other specialties. 

Consultant staff provide comprehensive subspecialty reconstructive expertise in  Elective and emergency Hand surgery, Head and neck reconstruction, Breast Reconstruction, Sarcoma soft tissue, abdominal wall and perineal reconstruction, cranio -maxillofacial trauma, dental pathology, lower limb trauma, and in 2017 established the North Metro Facial Trauma and bone reconstruction Unit. A service for chronic lymphoedema and free lymph node transfer is also provided.

Daily Plastics Dressing clinics run for post-operative wound management and assessment of urgent cases from ED departments. Over 1700 new referrals are seen per year and 8000 follow ups and dressings. Over 200 Country patients are seen via telehealth, and 190 minor procedures carried out in our minor ops theatre. Departmental education and training programmes are conducted for surgical trainees, interns and RMO’s. 

The Plastic Treatment centre/Dressings Clinic is open Monday to Friday (closed Public Holidays).

Post-operative and patients discharged from the plastics ward are seen as required by the skilled medical and nursing staff for assessment and ongoing care of their wounds. Urgent cases are also directly referred to the department from emergency departments, General Practitioners and country Health services.
