Celebrating our dedicated staff!
Congratulations Dr James Nolan, our November SCGH Employee of the Month Award winner.
Meet our November SCGH Employee of the Month Award winner, Dr James Nolan, Registrar in the Department of Rehabilitation and Aged Care.
James was nominated for this award by Social Worker Suzanne Pinker, who said James’ holistic approach to medicine, has touched the hearts of the staff, families and patients on Ward C16.
His nomination is supported by the entire team on Ward C16 including Clinical Nurse Specialist Fiona Irwin, Head of Department Dr Elissa Campbell, and his supervising Consultants Dr Brendan Foo and Dr Ahmad Uzair, for his can-do approach and beautiful nature.
James has been described as compassionate, empathetic and very calm with patients, he thinks of others before himself, and has a team focus. He listened to clients, their families and the team and he was able to consider everyone, yet remain patient-focused.
James understands the complexities of families and is a strong advocate for them. After family meetings, it was clear that families and patients felt they had been heard.
Patients have described him as incredible, like he has fallen from heaven – always taking time to be present for patients and their families.
James has shown innovation in striving to achieve better patient outcomes. He undertook additional responsibilities, including the challenging role of supervision and training within the team, assisting in education and feedback of junior doctors with a multi-source approach.
James’ ability to manage the ward without an intern along with his clinics, showed his multi-tasking ability and good work ethic. He has been commended for his reliability and his ability to assist others, making their job much easier.
Members of the multidisciplinary team say James always goes the extra mile, staying late and providing assistance and support beyond the scope of his position.
Nursing staff commented that they were grateful for James’ presence and assistance, especially working with some challenging patients in the Delirium Unit. They said he was willing to answer their questions even if the patient in question was not part of his team.
James is approachable and helpful. All aspects of his communication skills are excellent including his body language, verbal skills, and staff were able to read his notes, which was really helpful and allowed for a smooth handover - it was always clear from his notes what the plan was for the patient.
It’s clear that James made a huge impact on staff, patients and their families during his three-month rotation with the Rehabilitation and Aged Care team, and that he displays great alignment between his personal values and our NMHS values.
Congratulations James, you deserve this recognition! You have been a calming presence on the ward, graciously and without judgement willing to offer your ear, heart and knowledge to all members of staff, families and patients.
James and his colleagues will be invited to a catered afternoon tea where he will be presented with a $150 gift voucher from sponsors.
A special thanks to our generous sponsors: HESTA, Paywise, Smartsalary and Aware Super.
