Staff Profile - Deidre Burnell 13 October 2022 Senior Speech Pathologist Deidre Burnell has seen plenty of changes in her 23 years at Osborne Park Hospital, but her reasons for staying have remained constant. "One of the reasons I like working at OPH is the size of the hospital – it’s large enough to have a wide variety of clients but small enough that staff still know each other," she says. "It creates a friendly feeling and a sense of supporting each other. When I started working on the wards, I was working with a senior nurse who became a co-director of the hospital. We would still see each other around the hospital and be able to have a chat." The staff she has worked with over the years – both in the Speech Pathology Department and the stroke and Parkinson’s teams she works closely with – have also made a huge difference to her experience. "My ‘speechy’ colleagues have been so suppor...

But the most grandiose flora emerging is the moojar, or Australian Christmas Tree (Nuytsia flori...

Grant to support brain cancer patients 23 September 2022 Cancer Services Occupational Therapy Coordinator Brooke Russell has won a grant to research the impact of early allied health intervention on patients with brain cancer. Patients with high grade glioma (HGG), one of the most common adult brain tumours, are at risk of extended hospital stays. Symptoms of the incurable cancer include mobility issues, paralysis, loss of vision and memory, and seizures. Initial referrals to allied health are occurring late in the patient’s journey, either when they present to hospital for additional treatment and support or when they are no longer coping at home. The patient then remains in hospital while appropriate assessments, interventions and referrals are made to ensure they can be safely supported at home. “This can take up to six to eight weeks to arrange from start to finish and causes a significantly increased hospital stay,” B...
