  • Kaitlyn Holyman, IF Program; Mandy McKnight, Area Executive Director, Nursing Services and Naomi Parkins, Nurse Manager, Patient Flow Unit
Shiftmatch Cohort Model - Congrats Naomi Parkins! 11 June 2021 Congratulations to Naomi Parkins, SCGOPHCG Nurse Manager, Patient Flow Unit, for presenting her Innovative Future project at the 10th International Congress on Innovations in Nursing (external site) in May 2021. Naomi, along with Michael Stuart and Keren Smith applied to the Innovative Future (IF) program in round one, to address the problems they were experiencing with managing casual staff shifts. The booking system at the time was administrative intensive, had a high risk of error, and was fraught with inconsistencies across different areas. To improve the process, a system needed to be implemented that was transparent, dynamic, efficient, user friendly, consistent, and allowed ease of communication. Enter Shiftmatch Cohort Model Shiftmatch is a web-based rostering system that automatically matches suitably qualified staff to roster shortages, and communicates the shortage to them via...

Collaboration brings new meal options to the table 21 May 2021 To improve the patient experience at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Catering Services has been working closely with Dietetic and Speech Pathology colleagues to identify currently available vegetarian meals which can be modified in texture to meet the needs of patients who require either a puree or minced meal, whilst meeting the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) Framework. The three departments have been collaborating to finalise a matrix that identifies a variety of vegetarian meal choices that can be prepared for patients at short notice. Meals are modified by a team of cooks which are then assessed for texture by the Speech Pathology team and for nutritional content by the Dietetics team. The logistics of preparation have been coordinated by Catering’s Assistant Manager for Food Safety, Melissa Fraser. Once testing has been finalised there will be...

Nurse Spotlight - SCGH's Harry Kahlon 12 May 2021 In celebration of International Nurses Day 2021, we are shining a spotlight on our exceptional nurses. This year the Sir Charles Gairdner Osborne Park Health Care Group is focusing on nurse innovation in the face of an unprecedented global health crisis. The pandemic has opened up opportunities for us to stop and explore what we do and how we do it, providing nurses a way to do things better. Today’s spotlight is on Harrinder Kahlon (Harry), Registered Nurse on Ward G61 at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, for his work as Project Lead for the introduction of “The Cannulators”, a team who is training colleagues on ways to enhance patient care through reducing risk of infection.
