Celebrating our dedicated staff! 23 July 2020 Our SCGOPHCG Employee of the Month Award winner for May is Jeanine Alford Clinical Nurse Manager for Ward 4 at Osborne Park Hospital (OPH). Jeanine was nominated by Sharon Burke, Acting Coordinator of Nursing who said Jeanine is an excellent advocate for her patients and her staff. “Jeanine manages Ward 4 Younger Adult Rehab at OPH, a very complex and challenging patient cohort, and has been pivotal in the improvements in patient flow between Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and OPH,” said Sharon. “Traditionally there have been a number of barriers for larger patients, aggressive patients and complex patients being admitted to OPH. Jeanine has been incredibly pro-active in breaking through these barriers and displaying a can-do attitude in order to ensure these patients receive the most appropriate care in the most appropriate setting. Revolutionising telehealth for adults with Cystic Fibrosis 07 July 2020 Physiotherapy and exercise is an integral part of the management of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) though adults with CF normally have limited access to home based specialist physiotherapy and are unable to participate in community based group exercise due to cross-infection risks. Tamara Hatton, a SCGH Physiotherapist saw this problem as an opportunity to innovate and applied to the NMHS Innovative Future (IF) Program seeking to establish a telehealth home-based exercise service providing supervised individual and group exercise sessions. The goal of the project was to increased access to specialist physiotherapy and group based exercise to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare utilisation, including hospital admission. Genevieve was nominated by Justine Huggins, CNM OPH Women’s and Newborn Services who said Genevieve encompasses everything you would want if you could handpick your own private midwife - the perfect nurturer who always puts her patients and their families first. Genevieve was recently involved in a rare and complex obstetric case and displayed incredible compassion and empathy to the family, voluntarily advocating to conduct home visits to maintain continuity of care. Jeanette is on long service leave so we are not able to include a photo of her smiling face. Jeanette was nominated by Elly Nason CN who described her as one of those nurses you meet in your career that makes a lasting impression, with their level of caring and compassion. "As a valued member of the CCU team, she goes above and beyond for her patients and all her fellow colleagues every day. Jeanette's kind and caring manner is only second to her wicked sense of humour and constant laughter she brings to the ward. Visiting assistance animals in NMHS hospitals 29 April 2020 To coincide with International Guide Dog Day, celebrated this year on 29 April, the NMHS hospital network has produced a Visiting Assistance Animals guide that recognises the importance of assistance animals and welcomes their use, where appropriate, in our facilities. The Guide provides information about the use of assistance animals in our hospitals and arrangements that may need to be made for patients, visitors and their assistance animal. International Guide Dog Day acknowledges the critical role that guide dogs and assistance animals play in enabling people with impaired vision to get around safely. It’s amazing what a difference four paws, a wet nose and a wagging tail can make in assisting vision impaired people, as well as people with other disabilities, to safely experience freedom and independence.
