Junior Doctor Manifesto leading the way at the North Metropolitan Health Service 22 May 2023 North Metropolitan Health Service was recently awarded a prestigious innovation award at the national Health Roundtable showcase in Melbourne, for its innovative approach to the recruitment and retention of junior doctors. North Metropolitan Health Service (NMHS) Area Director Clinical Services Dr George Eskander said he was delighted the organisation had received recognition for the innovative Junior Doctor Manifesto (JDM), which placed focus on more flexible work arrangements that has led to the remarkable uptake of junior doctor roles. "It really was a team effort and I thank everyone involved who helped to create the JDM, especially as it pushed traditional rostering boundaries and challenged the health workforce to embrace a more flexible work life balance," he said. Congratulations Mia Ballard, Lorraine Johnson Preceptor Award winner 22 May 2023 Congratulations to the winner of the 2023 Lorraine Johnson Preceptor Award, Mia Ballard. Mia was presented with her award by Executive Director of Nursing Annie Thompson, at a special celebration at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital on 9 May, 2023 as part of International Nurses Day celebrations. The Lorraine Johnson Preceptor award is given to the nurse who displays the attributes and skills considered invaluable in providing education and support to students and newly graduated nursing staff. The award is named after Lorraine Johnson who worked for many years as the Graduate Nurse Program Coordinator at SCGH and sadly passed away in September 2006. Lorraine had extensive teaching experience and was instrumental in providing ongoing support to students and graduated nursing staff. Ride of thanks by Perth grandfather for SCGH 28 March 2023 A former patient with stage four terminal brain cancer rode his bike from Bunbury to Perth over the weekend to raise funds and pay tribute to staff at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Despite Gordon MacDonald being diagnosed with stage four terminal brain cancer in January 2022 and given 12 to 14 months to live, he was determined to make this journey and raise funds via the Charlies Foundation. After 30 rounds of radiation, 10 rounds of chemotherapy and brain surgery Mac is still fighting strong wanted to pay thanks to the health professionals who saved him. “When I decided to try and raise funds for Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital it started out being all about money,” he said. “But now it’s about raising awareness of this terrible thing and about trying to say thank you and raise money for research.” Affectionally known as Mac, he is a former London Metropoli... -
Official Health Care Partner of World Transplant Games 21 March 2023 Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) is proud to be appointed as the official Health Care Partner of the 2023 World Transplant Games. The World Transplant Games is a celebration of a second chance at life and aims to demonstrate the success of transplant surgery and raise awareness of organ and tissue donation. It also provides the chance to say thank you to donor families. Our Renal Medicine and Transplantation Department provides a tertiary level service for renal medicine in Perth's north metropolitan area, with outreach services reaching widely across the State. Our Liver Transplant Unit is the state referral and treatment centre for The Western Australian Liver Transplant Service. Glenda Rayment, Marg Martin and Esther Scott, who received liver transplants at SCGH, will be competing at the World Transplant Games. NMHS Junior Medical Officer Manifesto 14 December 2022 The NMHS is wholeheartedly committed to leading the way as the employer of choice and ensuring that all Junior Medical Officers (JMO) are valued as integral members of the NMHS family. The NMHS JMO Manifesto has been developed in collaboration with our Junior Doctors and Doctors in training, Charlies RMO Society, Senior Clinicians and the Australian Medical Association (AMA). The commitments are outlined as follows: 1. Part time roles and flexible working arrangements There will be 35 new part-time opportunities created across NMHS, encompassing job-share and ward-based arrangements. An expression of interest has been sent out for these positions across multiple departments within NMHS. 2.
