Kambarang season is here 05 October 2022 The earthly surface of the Noongar region is now fully alive and dense with the pageant of Kambarang flowers reflecting the starlit evenings of the dazzling galaxy above. Warm bright days and intense jewel-toned sunsets of ruby, sapphire and citrine lure us outside like siren songs and gently lift our chins to kiss the sun. Running from October to November, Kambarang is the season of transformation, birth and wildflowers symbolised by the colour yellow for the radiance of the sun and the hot weather to come. A full palette of colour is on display but yellow is the hero with delicate golden wattle (acacia), timid ochre orchids and kangaroo paws, and lofty banksias standing haughtily against a back drop of balga trees which continue to bloom (especially if they met with last year’s fire). New Sustainability Leaders program and our first award winner! 03 October 2022 The program Our innovative team in the Climate and Sustainability program have launched their latest initiative to green our services called ‘Sustainability Leaders’. So far over 147 staff members have joined the program! One element of the initiative known as ‘Champions Corner’ is to identify a passionate staff member working hard on sustainability and climate initiatives and award them the title of ‘Sustainability Leader of the Month’. To be awarded, the person must: have been driving change throughout the month and advocating for the program taken initiative to make sustainable choices and encourage those around them to better their department be passionate for the cause and interested in the future of the organisations Climate & Sustainability goals; and be a great team player and overall sustainability leader. Grant to support brain cancer patients 23 September 2022 Cancer Services Occupational Therapy Coordinator Brooke Russell has won a grant to research the impact of early allied health intervention on patients with brain cancer. Patients with high grade glioma (HGG), one of the most common adult brain tumours, are at risk of extended hospital stays. Symptoms of the incurable cancer include mobility issues, paralysis, loss of vision and memory, and seizures. Initial referrals to allied health are occurring late in the patient’s journey, either when they present to hospital for additional treatment and support or when they are no longer coping at home. The patient then remains in hospital while appropriate assessments, interventions and referrals are made to ensure they can be safely supported at home. “This can take up to six to eight weeks to arrange from start to finish and causes a significantly increased hospital stay,” B... -
Message from the Chief Executive 09 September 2022 We are saddened to learn of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II overnight. Her devotion to country was exemplified by her care and integrity, and a lifetime of service leading the Commonwealth and her country through significant change. Get set for surgery with prehab 08 September 2022 Cancer patients can now better prepare themselves for surgery in the comfort of their home, thanks to an innovative program developed at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. In the Prehab Hub (external site), physiotherapist Luisa Perrella guides patients through a series of exercise videos designed to improve their physical and psychological condition before surgery. It’s a virtual version of the work Luisa has been doing with patients at the Surgical Gym she started at SCGH two years ago. Deeps Majumdar, an anaesthetist with a special interest in prehabilitation for major surgery, saw the benefit of taking Luisa’s potentially life-saving work online.
